From One Family's Journey to a Community's Sanctuary
Legacy's story began long before our organization existed.
When our founder, Shanelle Snowden, was just 16 years old, her mother was diagnosed with younger-onset dementia. What followed was a journey that would forever change her family. Like so many families navigating dementia, they experienced the challenges of caregiving firsthand, including the emotional toll, isolation, and difficulty finding meaningful support.
After her mother's passing in 2016, those experiences remained with her, shaping a desire to create something different for families walking a similar path.
Legacy originally began as a home health care agency. But when the COVID-19 pandemic brought unexpected challenges, it also became a turning point, creating an opportunity to rethink how Legacy could best serve families and communities.
In 2023, Legacy transitioned into a nonprofit organization with a renewed focus on family caregivers of individuals living with dementia. What began as a deeply personal experience grew into a mission centered on providing respite, promoting caregiver wellness, and creating opportunities for education, connection, and community.
Today, Legacy is more than an organization providing services. We're building a community where caregivers feel seen, supported, and valued, and where caring for someone else doesn't have to mean losing sight of yourself.
Our purpose is simple: to be the support our family once needed and help ensure no caregiver has to navigate this journey alone.
